Pac-Man Creators Give Nissan SUVs New Sounds

Nissan-Pathfinder-Interior | Dixon, IL

Although we would never recommend playing a video game while driving your Nissan, you might feel like you are in a video game when you ride in a new 2021 Nissan Pathfinder or Rogue at Ken Nelson Nissan.

Why is that? Nissan teamed up with the Bandai Namco Group, the makers of Pac-Man to redesign the sound signals inside some Nisan models — and you can hear the difference.

The Bandai Namco Group’s imaginative sound designers wanted to create sounds that would communicate with drivers in a more musical, organic way, as opposed to the harsher sounds previously used in those SUV models.

“We wanted to make it easier to understand the information in the car and provide an emotional tone so that people feel the Nissan brand,” explained Hiroyuki Suzuki, Nissan’s lead engineer for in-car information sound design.

Like in a video game, the sounds you hear in your Nissan are telling you critical information, for example, one tone pattern will remind you to put on your seatbelt, while another sound tells you your headlights are still on. These new Nissan SUV sounds are much more friendly, which you can hear in the automaker’s video spotlight on the sound creation process.

During the process, Nissan engineers realized the monotone device usually used to emit sounds would not work, so they created a new speaker. These updated Nissan models come with a high-quality speaker underneath the dashboard that is optimized for the new custom sounds.

To hear these new sounds in person, test-drive a Pathfinder or Rogue at Ken Nelson Nissan. If you’re a young parent in Dixon, Illinois, who has a soft spot for childhood nostalgia and care about the safety of your family’s SUV, you’ll enjoy owning these Nissan models.
